Senior Pathways

At Little Yarra Steiner School we offer a range of exceptional pathways that cater to diverse talents and aspirations. Here’s an overview of the options available for your child to excel in their senior school years.

  1. VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education) with ATAR
  2. VCE unscored (no ATAR) with a Class 12 Independent Project
  3. VCE (no ATAR) with one scored VCE subject and Class 12 Independent Project

In addition, all students engage in a Main Lesson program each morning that provides insights and skills across a broad range of learning areas in line with Steiner’s indications for Class 11 & 12.

VCE with ATAR

The VCE program, usually undertaken over a two-year period, is a traditional academic pathway leading to the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). It provides a comprehensive foundation for students aiming for tertiary studies. Through a carefully structured learning approach, students can achieve an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) to gain entry into a range of undergraduate programs.

  • Curriculum: A broad range of subjects are available to choose from including English, Mathematics, the Sciences, Humanities, and the Arts.
  • Support: Personalised guidance from experienced teachers to help students achieve their best VCE results.
  • Outcome: Achieve a VCE with an ATAR for entry into various university courses.

Unscored VCE and Class 12 Independent Project

For students who are passionate about pursuing specific interests or alternative pathways, they may choose to undertake an unscored VCE combined with the Independent Project available in Class 12. This flexible option allows students to explore personal academic or creative endeavours alongside traditional studies.

  • Unscored VCE: Students engage in VCE subjects without the pressure of graded assessments and external examinations, focusing instead on personal growth and learning.
  • Class 12 Independent Project: An opportunity for students to undertake a year-long, self-directed project based on their interests, guided by a mentor and supported through supervision by a Senior School teacher.
  • Outcome: A personalised learning experience, the successful completion of the VCE and a Class 12 Independent Project outcome that can complement university applications or other career aspirations.

VCE with a Graded VCE Subject and an Independent Project

This pathway is designed for students who wish to combine the rigor of a graded VCE subject within their VCE program along with the freedom to explore an Independent Project. This approach offers a balanced and innovative approach to senior school education.

  • Graded VCE Subject: One VCE subject pursued with a focus on academic achievement inclusive of an external examination, and the remaining VCE subjects unscored. Students may request approval to receive a study score for more than one subject.
  • Class 12 Independent Project: A student-driven, year-long project that encourages creativity, research, and critical thinking; guided by a mentor and supported through supervision by a Senior School teacher.
  • Outcome: A combination of formal academic qualifications in the form of the VCE, a single study score, and the Class 12 Independent Project outcome; all of which can complement university applications or other career aspirations.
